I have garden for years but have not done a fall garden yet. What are the best things to plant this time of year through the fall?

You are cutting it close to start anything using standard growing methods, but there are a handful of items that should produce for you. First off look for fast growing plants that can tolerate the cold as we will be having cooler nights. Lettuces is one of the fastest plants to grow and they can tolerate frosts. You can also try beets, collard greens, and mustard greens but their grow time might be a bit too long. The same for broccoli, cabbage and kale who tolerate frosts too but they also have grow times ranging from 60 to 90 days.
